Track Social Media Information Against Contacts

Posted by Author, Curator, Visually Impared Squirrel Literacy Advocate & Dynamics AX Technical Solution Professional (TSP) at Microsoft on

The contact management feature within Dynamics AX allows you to track an unlimited number of phone numbers, email addresses, and websites against a contact. But these are just the direct contact types. We live in the age of Social Media, and there are so many other different sources of information that we want to track against our contacts. Don’t’ despair, with a small tweak to the configuration within Dynamics AX, you can add additional contact media types and start tracking all this information.

Now you will be able to get the full scoop on you customers and contacts.

How To Do It…

By default, Dynamics AX lets you track the common information against contacts like phone numbers, email addresses, web sites, and telex (who the heck even uses that).

To add more types to Dynamics AX, open up AOT, expand the Data Dictionary group, and then expand the Base Enums group.

Within the Base Enums, find the LogisticsElectronicAddressMethodTypes enumeration and expand it.

You will see all of the standard types are listed there.

Now right-mouse-click on the LogisticsElectronicAddressMethodTypes enumeration, and select the New Element menu item.

When the new element is created, change the Name and Label to be your new method type – in this case Twitter.

If you want to be an overachiever, then you can add a few more contact method types through AOT.

To test this, save your model and then restart Dynamics AX.

How It Works…

Now when you look at the types that are available for you within the Contact Information you will see that you have the option for all of the different social media types.

Now you can track everything properly.

How cool is that?
